Pandemic Flu Preparedness: an Integrative Approach

In the event of a worldwide influenza pandemic, it is clear that an effective flu vaccine will be unavailable to the public in the first critical months. This will likely result in a surge of interest in holistic and integrative approaches to flu prevention and treatment. Spurred by the persistence of highly pathogenic H5N1 Avian Flu in Southeast Asia, conventional medical caregivers and institutions across the country have been busily preparing for the possibility of a global flu pandemic. It is both a moral imperative and common sense that holistic/integrative caregivers and institutions develop their own preparedness plans as well.

Trainings for Caregivers: In consultation with public health experts, I offer a training for holistic schools, continuing education programs, and groups of caregivers, entitled Prepare Your Healthcare Practice for Pandemic Influenza. This training instructs holistic and integrative caregivers on how best to prepare their healthcare practices against the possibility of pandemic flu. It provides up-to-date information and expert clinical advice from both a conventional medical perspective and from the perspectives of traditional Chinese medicine, homeopathy, herbalism, and other modalities.

Preparedness Planning Services:  I help caregivers, group practices, schools, and professional associations assemble integrative pandemic preparedness plans that when completed include: a detailed set of action steps; pandemic flu prevention and treatment protocols; an outreach strategy to conventional caregivers; and contingency plans in the event of personal/family illness, work quarantine, and/or supply shortages.

Consulting Services to Boards of Health and Medical Centers:  I help Boards of Health and medical centers effectively reach out to the holistic healthcare community in the course of their pandemic planning.
